Coaching Philosophy

Most tennis instruction starts with mechanics: bigger swings, cleaner footwork, more reps. Coach Russ starts somewhere else, with the decision. Nearly every missed shot traces back to a moment of confusion, not a broken stroke. The player didn't know what the point was asking for. Hit With Intent teaches players to read the moment before they react to it, so the swing becomes the result of a clear choice instead of a guess.

The system is built on five aligned ideas:

  • A shared language for every cue,
  • one clear intention behind every ball,
  • repeatable patterns instead of random rallies,
  • an awareness of what phase the point is in,
  • and the emotional steadiness to keep decisions from unraveling under pressure.
Players who train this way stop chasing results and start trusting a process that holds up whether they're down two breaks or serving for the match.

Hit with Intent

"Confidence, Focus, and Composure for the Thoughtful Competitor." Hit with Intent is Coach Russ's complete tactical coaching method, built around five aligned pillars: language, intention, pattern, phase, and emotion.

Inside, you'll find the Coach's and Player's Checklists, the ten drills that build the system from the ground up, and a diagnostic guide to the ten most common breakdowns in junior and intermediate tennis, with the fix for each one. It's the same material Coach Russ uses in every lesson, distilled into a book you can keep courtside.
